As the we head into the shorter days of winter, Boston Bikes and the Boston Police Department are reminding cyclists to “be bright” with a new campaign in Allston-Brighton in November. Be Bright aims to increase awareness for cyclists on the importance of being visible to pedestrians, motorists, and other cyclists as the evening commute begins to occur after sundown. Having a powerful front light on bicycles also happens to be the law in the state of Massachusetts.
Cyclists can print a coupon from the Boston Bikes facebook page or visit select Allston village cafes for 15% off bicycle lights good through the end of the year at these participating local bike shops:
- Bicycle Bills 53 North Harvard St. Allston
- Eastern Mountain Sports 1041 Commonwealth Ave. Allston
- International Bicycle Centers 89 Brighton Ave. Allston
- Urban Adventours 109 Atlantic Ave. North End
The Boston Police Department will be staffing key intersections during commuting hours in the neighborhood to alert road users of the proper rules, specifically targeting the need to be visible at night. The Boston Transportation Department is stepping up enforcement in the area, targeting vehicles double parked in bicycle lanes, currently a $100 fine.
