Join us September 19th, 2015 (the day before Hub on Wheels) for the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup Criterium, a professional cycling race in the heart of downtown Boston! Nearly 200 top professional racers, including Olympians and national champions, will return to Boston to compete for $30,000 in prize money. Tight packs of pro cyclists will ride to their limits as they sprint for cash bonuses, dive into sharp corners, and try to break away from the hungry pack in a classic course around City Hall. There’s no better example of high-speed, spectator-friendly entertainment!
Come sit in the grandstands or find a spot around the course to cheer on the pros with thousands of other fans!
What it is: A criterium, commonly known among racers as a “crit,” is the most popular form of bike racing in the U.S. The race course is a closecircuit track around downtown streets. Racers typically complete a lap per minute, traveling at speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour.
Getting here: The races take place outside of City Hall. The closest MBTA stops include State St (Orange and Blue lines), Haymarket (Green and Orange lines) and Park St (Red and Green lines). Cars may park at Government Center Garage.
Details: FREE for spectators! While you can watch anywhere along the course, the best locations to watch are along the straight-aways (Congress St and Cambridge St) under the main banners. Veteran emcees will make sure you take in all the action.
Other activities include:
- Boloco Block Party at City Hall Plaza
- Kids race open to ages 3–9
- Annual Hubway Mascot Race
