Mongoose bike brand is among the hundreds of well-known bike brands around these days fighting for a chance to be recognized. But with that many brands and bikes around, it's tough for a particular brand to stand out! However, Mongoose bikes is among the few that do, and they've left an impressive track record along the way. In this Mongoose Bike Review, we'll go over everything you need to know about the Mongoose brand and why it may or may not be the company you want to support with your next bike purchase.
Mongoose History Review
To understand if the mongoose bikes are any good, knowing its brand history is one of the most critical factors. A general principle is that the older the brand, the better the product in MOST cases. If the brand is new, you'd have no assurance that their products are good since they wouldn't receive enough feedback on how to improve their bikes. As such, whenever you see a brand that has survived for decades, you can rest assured that this brand has an excellent track record.
Mongoose bikes, like a few other bike brands, has been growing and changing owners over the years. These ownership changes can be a tell-tale sign of a struggling brand or signify that it was worth acquiring. In the case of Mongoose, it might be a mixture of both struggles and successes.
Mongoose was first founded in September 1974 by Skipp Hess as BMX Products, Inc. At that time, there weren't many BMX bike dealers, and Mongoose quickly took to the world stage with their products. They reported great success and had a high demand that required producing 600 bike frames a day.
Later on, competition and other economic factors led to their brand shifting owners in 1985, 1995, and finally ending up in the hands of the Pacific Cycle(owned now by Dorel Industries) in the 2000s. Since then, the brand has grown relatively stable and has branched out in Mountain Bikes and Scooters.
These days Mongoose (company) serves a huge market with great entry-level bikes like the Mongoose Dolomite, Argus, and Malus. Those bikes are among the best in class Fat tire mountain bikes you could buy right now. And at this point, no other brand does it better than Mongoose for the same price.
With that little bit of history in mind, we can now answer one of the most important questions you might have wondered:
Is Mongoose a Good Bike Brand?
Yes, Mongoose is considered a good brand with lots of high-quality bicycles. The company makes BMX, Mountain Bikes, and Fat Tire bikes that deliver superior performance at a low price that most other brands find had to compete against. Mongoose Bike Reviews
Now that you've made it this far, we'll quickly go over the different types of Mongoose bikes. We'll also give a brief review of each of the best mongoose bicycles in each of their categories. That way, you will know for sure which types to get and which to avoid.
A word of caution:
Mongoose entry-level bikes are considered entry-level because they are built solely for light and moderate rides. Most of their entry-level bikes can be found everywhere on online retailers. But if you're looking for more specialized mongoose bikes that can do the things shown in the video below, you'll need to buy directly from the Specialized shops that we'll share after the reviews.
Now that you know what to expect, let's jump into the mongoose bicycle reviews by bike type:
Mongoose Fat Tire Bike Reviews
The first of the bikes types from Mongoose that everyone knows of and loves is their Fat Tire bikes, so we'll start with the Best Mongoose Fat Tire Bikes we recommend:
Mongoose Dolomite Fat Tire Bike
The Mongoose Dolomite is one of the most popular fat tire bikes currently available now. It features extra-large wheels that will let you tackle any terrain. And best of all, it retails at an incredibly affordable price that other bike manufacturers can't compete against.
The Dolomite bicycle features a 7-speed twist shifter and a rear derailleur that changes gears smoothly. It has massive 26" x 4" knobby fat tires that roll over everything. Plus, the durable steel frame makes it more than capable of handling rocky terrains without any hassle.
The only downside we found about the Dolomite is the brakes. It uses a dual disc brake setup, but we found that it just doesn't stop as sharply. But considering that it's a fat tire bike that weighs about 48 lbs, we can ignore this issue. While the stopping power isn't that good due to the weight, they will still perform very well in any weather condition. Disc brakes perform much better than brake pads when the wheels are wet.
If you weigh over 300 pounds and need an excellent mongoose mountain bike for your weight, then the Dolomite is a great product.
Mongoose Malus Fat Tire Bike
The Mongoose Malus is the newer upgrade of the Dolomite that fixed some of its shortcomings. However, this fix does come at a slightly increased price with few performance increases.
Like the Dolomite, the Malus also features a steel mountain style fat tire frame. It uses the same dual disc brake setup but offers much better stopping power and speed control than the Dolomite. This is because the Malus uses better and lighter tires than the Dolomite.
Both bikes offer the same wheel size of 26x4" with alloy rims and 7-speed twist shifters.
What's the main difference between the Mongoose Malus vs Dolomite?
The major difference is that the Mongoose Malus is newer and lighter than the Dolomite since it uses better tires. However, the Dolomite is cheaper than the Malus on most retail sites. Another difference is that you can get more color options in the Malus than in the Dolomite.
Mongoose Argus Fat Tire bike
The last of their fat-tire bikes that we found noteworthy is the Mongoose Argus. It features much of the same setup but with more premium components. So instead of mongoose shifters, you'll get Shimano 7 speed derailleur. Moreover, you'll even be getting better braking performance from this disc brake setup on the Mongoose Argus.
However, one thing to note is that the Mongoose Argus comes in two sizes, whereas the others only have one. So with the Argus, you can get the 24-inch variant, which is suitable for kids. And then the standard 26-inch option for adults.
It's still the same tires, hardtail frame, handlebars, and it still offers outstanding reliability for even the heaviest riders.
Are the Mongoose Bmx bikes good?
This is a question we get asked quite often, and our answer is always a simple Yes. Mongoose BMX bikes are excellent and offer a great price to performance ratio. The BMX community loves them, and apart from minor issues with factory defects, most of the time, they receive very high review scores.
The Best Mongoose BMX bikes currently are the Mongoose Title and Legion series.
